These are among our favorite Sunday drives near Rancho Mirage. So grab a good friend, pack a picnic, or plan a stop and hit the highway in your Bentley this weekend.
Indian Canyons in Palm Springs.
There are many different canyons within the Indian Canyons but we are partial to Andreas Canyons, where the vibrant greens of the magnificent fan palms and more than 150 species of plants make up a verdant half-mile radius within this incredible oasis. Should you decide to step out of your Bentley, a scenic foot trail will lead you through the canyon passing groves of palms, rock formations, and the namesake Andreas Creek. You can also view bedrock mortars and metates used centuries ago for preparing food. This is a great canyon for taking photos, watching birds, or just relaxing.

Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument.
The Santa Rosa and San Jacinto mountains rise abruptly from the desert floor, reaching an elevation of 10,834 feet at the summit of Mount San Jacinto. The Santa Rosa and San Jacinto mountains provide a picturesque backdrop to local communities, the national monument significantly contributes to the Coachella Valley’s lure as a popular resort and retirement community. It is also a desirable backcountry destination that can be accessed via trails from both the valley floor and the alpine village of Idyllwild. This is the perfect Sunday drive. The Visitor Center is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday (Closed Monday through Thursday) from 8:30 until 4:00. Hours are subject to change. Mailing and Street Address: The center is on Highway 74, south of State Highway 111 in Palm Desert.
Palm Springs Aerial Tramway.
The scenic route to the top and the 360 aerial view Palm Springs area are among the best in the area. You can’t exactly reach the top of Mount San Jacinto by car, but you can drive up to about 5,500 feet. Visitors looking to reach the summit can then hike from a nearby trailhead. You also have the option to take the Palm Springs Aerial Tramway to around 8,500 feet and then continue hiking to the top. What’s not to love?
Joshua Tree National Park.
According to the National Parks website, Driving Park Boulevard can be a great way to see a lot of Joshua Tree National Park in just a couple of hours. This drive can be combined with side stops, lunch in the town of Joshua Tree, and hikes along the way for longer trips. Park Boulevard will take you by many highlights, rock formations, and Joshua tree groves – making it one of the most beautiful drives near Rancho Mirage. Some of the top highlights along Park Boulevard include Hidden Valley, Cap Rock, Ryan Mountain, and Skull Rock. Short detours can also add stops at Keys View and Barker Dam. This basic loop can be done by entering from either the north entrance (near Twentynine Palms) or the west entrance (near the town of Joshua Tree) and exiting from the other so that the trip both starts and ends from Highway 62 on the north side of the park. “To make the drive longer, Park Boulevard can be combined with Pinto Basin Road, entering from either the west entrance or south entrance and exiting from the other. This option will add more of the lower elevation Colorado Desert side to the drive and include the Cholla Cactus Garden and Cottonwood Spring,” according to the park service.
